The Instructors
David Winston, RH (AHG)
David has a unique background in herbal medicine. Trained in Cherokee, Chinese and Western/Eclectic Herbal Traditions, he has over 36 years of experience as a practitioner and educator.
A founding member at the American Herbalist Guild, he also acts as an herbal consultant to physicians and industry. David is the author of Saw Palmetto for Men & Women, Storey Books (1999), Herbal Therapeutics (2003), and the co-author of Herbal Therapy and Supplements: A Scientific and Traditional Approach, Lippincott (2001). He is a frequent contributor to numerous journals as well as the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia. In addition, he is president of Herbalist and Alchemist, Inc. a manufacturer of superb herbal extracts.
As an educator, David frequently lectures throughout the USA, Canada, & Europe, teaching at universities, medical and herb schools and symposia. He is an adjunct professor at the Tai Sophia Institute and is the Dean of the Center for Herbal Studies. In his spare-time, David directs the Herbal Therapeutics Research Library, one of the premiere herbal/ethnobotanical libraries in North America and is a traditional ceremonial leader (didahnewisgi) for his community.
Kerry Adams, ABT, NCCAOM, RH (AHG)
Kerry is a clinical herbalist and educator with over 25 years of experience. She is a 1993 graduate of David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies 2 year program and the one year graduate program. Kerry also graduated as a Charter Herbalist from Dominion Herbal College, Burnaby B.C. Canada in 1979, the Meridian Institute of Shiatsu and the East/West Institute.
She currently practices at the Holistic Health Care Center in Lebanon, NJ, a clinic combining Traditional and Comprehensive Medical care, and at her own clinic, Herbally Yours, founded in 1979. Kerry is also a licensed massage therapist, nationally certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine as a Diplomate in Asian Bodywork Therapy and is a member of the American Herbalist Guild and the Herbal Exchange since 1995.
In addition, she is an experienced teacher giving classes in herbal medicine, medicine making, fiber arts and Asian bodywork for the last 20 years.
Michael Anthonavage, MS Biology, BS Biology/Chemistry
Currently, Michael is a Principal Scientist at a major NJ pharmaceutical company developing new technologies for the treatment of skin. In total, Michael has 15 years experience at major international pharmaceutical companies around NJ as a Research Scientist involving basic research, developing cell culture and molecular biology techniques. Michael is a board certified Medical Technologist with 16 years of experience. Having worked in 3 major North Jersey hospitals, his areas of experience include clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, molecular pathology and dietary formulations. Michael has been an instructor at DW-CHS for 15 years and has given lectures on Plant Photochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and Clinical Laboratory Interpretations. Michael has been an adjunct professor for Montclair State University as well as Bloomfield College. Courses include Human Biology, Biological Sciences, and Biology for Survival.
Dale Bellisfield, BFA Painting, AAS Nursing, RN, AHG
Dale is a clinical herbalist, integrating her herbal and nursing training for over 10 years as a holistic practitioner. She is in private practice at the Siegler Center for Integrative Medicine, part of the Saint Barnabas system in Livingston, New Jersey, where she has been for five years. She works with a range of medically complex patients, and offers a multi-faceted program of healing, which includes custom herbal formula, therapeutic foods, nutritional supplements and lifestyle changes. In addition to her clinical work, she lectures extensively throughout the NY-NJ area to both health care practitioners and the lay public.
Prior to this, Dale helped create a holistic program at the Maitri Center, a comprehensive facility for an HIV positive, medically underserved population in Yonkers, New York, where she was also their herbalist for five years.
She has completed a three year apprenticeship with Wise Woman herbalist Robin Bennett, a two year undergraduate and one year post graduate training from David Winston, 500 hours with Tieraona Low Dog in her New Mexico clinic, and additional classes by Anastacia White in Traditional Chinese Medicine. She is a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild.
She has been working with Mohawk Chief Jake Swamp to create an herbarium of the traditional local plants of northern New York, which will be translated into Mohawk to preserve the language and the knowledge of their use.
Richard Mandelbaum, RH (AHG)
Richard is a clinical herbalist with a private practice in New York City and in Sullivan County, NY. He is the director of the Clinical Herbalist Diploma Program at the Lehigh Valley Healing Arts Academy in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and also teaches workshops in herbal medicine at the Center for Creative Therapies and the Arts in the Catskills. He is a frequent lecturer at the New Age Health Spa in Neversink, NY, and regularly gives plant walks at the New York Botanical Garden.
Richard has been practicing as an herbalist since 1997, with a background in both Chinese and Western herbal traditions, and is a graduate of David’s Center for Herbal Studies as well as the Advanced Herbal Training Program at Sage Mountain. Richard also studied with herbalist William LeSassier.
Richard has been an avid student of our native flora for over nineteen years, and in addition to teaching on a diverse range of clinical subjects, he often leads workshops on field botany, wild edible plants and mushrooms. He is a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild (AHG).
